Cranksgiving Cedar Rapids 2019!

Cranksgiving is a food drive on two wheels; part bike ride, part food drive, and part scavenger hunt. It’s been held annually in New York City since 1999. Every year, throughout the country, Cranksgiving events help provide thousands of needy families with a wealth of food during the week of Thanksgiving. For the second year in a row, we’re including Cedar Rapids in this national movement!

Join Goldfinch Cyclery and neighborhood friends at the Newbo City Market for the second annual Cranksgiving Cedar Rapids on Sunday, November 11th in partnership with the Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry. All of the food collected during the event will benefit those who utilize the resources from the Loaves & Fishes Mission House in Cedar Rapids.

Pump up your tires, grab your helmet, bring a bag, a lock, your navigational skills and $15-$20 to buy food. Registration/Check-in and breakfast at the Newbo City Market begins at 10 am. You’ll be provided with a manifest listing food items to buy from specific grocery stores around town and time before the official start to strategize your route. At 11 am we’ll blow the start whistle and it’s up to you to navigate to as many grocery store ‘checkpoints’ as possible to purchase the specific food items on the list. Once you’ve acquired everything on the list you must deliver the goods to the food pantry and make it back down to the Newbo neighborhood for the finish-line + after party at the Ideal Social Hall. You’ll receive a raffle ticket for every item you acquire from our manifest to enter in a drawing for RAD prizes provided by our partners. Your completed manifest, including all of your receipts, also earns you a free pint from Lion Bridge Brewery and the Cranksgiving Cedar Rapids canvas tote-bag from the folks at Bike Rags. Last year’s Cranksgiving Cedar Rapids donated over 1600lbs of non-perishable food and hygiene items to the food pantry. Let’s see if we can top that this year!

Loaves & Fishes is a food pantry located in Westminster’s mission house at 1251 Third Avenue, SE. It is a joint ministry of Westminster Presbyterian Church and Christ Episcopal Church. Their guiding principles are to treat everyone with respect and offer as much choice and dignity as possible. Every Tuesday from 3 to 5 p.m between 100-200 people come to the pantry for a box of food organized and distributed by volunteers. In turn, that food reaches about 1,500 individuals each month. Clients are typically poor, old, unemployed, disabled, homeless, abandoned, veterans, mentally ill and single parents. Visit the Loaves & Fishes website ( for more information about Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry and how you can continue to contribute to this invaluable resource.

CLOSED Sept. 28th-30th

We’ll be closed next Friday, Sept.29th through Sunday the 30th and setting up shop down at the Jingle Cross Festival & UCI World Cup . Our shop tent is your neutral support for the weekend, friends, so be sure to swing by for some race day high-fives and positive vibes! If you’re already planning on catching the World Cup action on Saturday evening you should totally join us for the Jingle Cross Gravel Group Ride and score yourself a FREE ticket to the big show!

We’re super pumped to team up with Gravel Scouts and World of Bikes to bring you this year’s Jingle Cross Gravel Group Ride! Take a brief intermission from the cyclocross World Cup action and join us Saturday, Sept. 29th at 7am at the Terry Trueblood Recreation Areal for about 50 miles of beautiful Johnson County gravel goodness. Everyone that comes along for the ride scores a FREE pass to the evenings Jingle Cross World Cup Races!

Flat tires can happen and leave you stranded. We want to empower you with the knowledge to fix the flat, get yourself home, and do it with style! There will be a demonstration, hands on stations, and plenty of time for discussion. You will leave this clinic knowing what tools you will need and how to use them! Feel free to bring your bike or front wheel, but it’s not required. This W/T/F (women, trans, femme) event will be hosted by Michelle Barker and Rebecca Crouse of Goldfinch Cyclery in Cedar Rapids. No dudes allowed! Light refreshments will be provided. This workshop is free to attend, but we are requesting that attendees help build community for other women by bringing a hygiene item or cash to be donated to the local Waypoint ServicesMadge Phillips Center Shelter.
